December 4, Expressive Portrait/Figure Workshop

Beginner, intermediate and advanced artist will benefit from demonstrations as Tonja paints the portrait and figure from reference photos and guides you through her process for creating expressive yet life-like people.

Students will discover:

  • How to begin a painting using a photo reference

  • What photographs make the best references for portrait and figure painting and how to edit them.

  • How to begin a gesture drawing from your reference..

  • How to decipher the puzzle of portraiture.  Learn to navigate the shapes of the face and put them together to achieve a likeness.

  • Learn to see and block; contrast and values, shadow and mid tone.

  • Discover how to mix limited colors to create rich color.

  • Learn essential acrylic materials and how to use them.

  • Learn the importance of edges

  • Create a monochromatic painting

  • Create a full color portrait

Students are encouraged to bring their own photographs,  however Tonja will have some on hand if needed. You may focus on portraits or figures or both.  Experience this exciting approach to figure/ portrait painting using acrylics, as Tonja guides students through her process.

We will be using a variation of the Zorn Palette:

Ivory Black

Flake or Titanium White

Vermillion Red or Cadmium Red light or medium

Yellow Ochre

Optional colors:

Cerulean Blue

Viridian Green

If you have and would like to bring additional colors,  you are very welcome to do so. Full supply list available upon Registration

If we do not have enough students enrolled to run the class, we may have to cancel twenty-four hours prior to the class meeting. We do not like to do this, so please encourage your friends and/or family to take the class with you!
