Registrations may be made over the phone, in person or through the mail.

Payment must accompany registrations. Registration fees will be refunded if the CVA cancels a class. If you cancel, refunds will be given 10 days prior to the 1st class, less a $5 processing fee. No refund will be given if you cancel within 10 days. Photos may be taken for promo; your permission is assumed unless you notify us.

Marbled Silk Ornaments with Cathy Matel

You will learn a new silk dyeing technique by dyeing a sample sized piece and then making your fabric into a beautiful holiday ornament. You'll also have the option to add a glowing light inside! To register call 715-842-4545 or stop in at the CVA! Class limited to 10 participants.

Always wanted to try your hand at painting but didn't know where to start? Sign up to experiment and play in CVA Studio Room. Try OUR stuff in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, color pencil.

 

Instructor: Valerie Berkely, award-winning local artist, long-standing instructor and Education Volunteer at the CVA.  Valerie trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Superior where she earned her art degree specializing in painting.  She is well versed in all painting media: oil, acrylic, watercolor, color pencil, mixed media.  See her website www.berkelydesign.com

Fused glass is a grand medium! Its techniques vary, its texture smooth, sharp, and vivid.

Rich in visual wonder. The chemistry of glass is tricky while enhancing the creative vision.

Come join us and create a gift for someone special.

Students will create a 5" x 5" piece.

This is a great class for kids ages 8-14. Give them glass fusing experience that teaches them

about the medium. We will look at what it is and how it is made. Learning more is part of this

CVA class, with most focus on creating their own unique pieces in explainable steps. We will

talk about lines, balance, and glass safety. Each student will make 3 2" x 3" pieces

that you can treasure always.

Create 6" fused and fun creations!

We will look at this medium and then the spirit of expression and create faces of fused glass in hands-on studio time. Holidays, special occasions, or just for keep, this class will give your child or teen the fusing glass experience. A fun, different evening/afternoon of mindful creativity.

Learn the basics of the fun and creative aspects of glass fusing, while learning

about the chemistry of glass while creating a picture of fused glass.

This technique will cover an area of 3" x 8" piece of fused glass for you to prize.

 

Let your creativity and the nature of heat and glass take

over in producing a final piece.

Workshop Date: Saturday, January 17

This morning workshop is designed to guide individuals with some experience in watercolor effective approaches to painting images of fabrics (including patterned fabrics and quilts). Instructions will include several approaches to creating shadows and

volume when painting folded cloth using shadows and color.

Students expected to bring own materials:

- watercolor paints

- paper (140 lb Arches WC paper is recommended)

- brushes

Optional: A liquid mask and a painting board to tape your WC paper to is recommended

Description:

The purpose of this course is to offer an introduction to the essentials of the Adobe Creative Suite. Students taking the course will be guided through the process of creating new projects in each of the three programs. Furthermore, time will be devoted to facilitating understanding of which program to use for specific functions and how these programs interact with each other. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to create their own work, demonstrated by the completion of certain projects that are print-ready.

8 Steps to Great Photos with Barbara Smith

9:30 - 2:30pm (1 hour for lunch)

Description:

Learn how to make more compelling pictures by following the 8 Steps to Great Photos.

We will start with how the camera works, how to navigate the menu, camera set-up, and various frequently used functions and features. Then we'll explore the 8 Steps to Great Photos, which include taking control of the camera and learning to se and think like a photographer. You will also find out how to avoid the most common mistakes made by beginners. Please bring your fully charged camera and its instruction manual with you to class. All camera types are welcome.

 

You'll learn how to:

- identify and describe different kinds of light, and set the exposure accordingly

- select appropriate shooting modes for the depth of field or motion effect desired

- apply several photographic techniques and compositional principles to photos

 

 

 

 

 

Special Requirements

- Participants need to download their manuals: in your browser, type in your camera's make and the model number, plus the words: manual download. A few cameras still include a manual with purchase, but most have only a start-up brochure, which is not sufficient. Bring your manual and camera to each class.

The Magic of Photoshop with Barbara Smith

Description:

Photoshop is the most powerful image editing program and this course covers the essentials for photographers. Learn how to edit your photos from start to finish: organize and review your images in Bridge, enhance them in Camera Raw, and edit them in detail in Photoshop. Find out how much editing is enough or too much, what artifacts are and how to avoid them, and how to prepare photos for e-mail, web, and print. We will be using Photo CS6, but the basic techniques covered can be used with Photoshop versions CS3 through CS6.

 

CVA Mac lap tops have CS6 and are available for use!

 

Special Requirements

- Participants need a basic understanding of computer use: including handling folders/document and using a mouse.

Dyeing Silk with Salt Technique with Cathy Matel

Workshop Date: Thursday, January 29

Class location: CVA Pottery Studio Room

Description:

Create a beautiful, one of a kind scarf using a salt technique. Choose your colors and use

a free form pattern, then watch as unusual variegation emerges. Different paint

application techniques and salt size make each piece unique.

In this two-night class, you will build on marbling techniques learned in the salt

technique class. Not required to have taken previous class but would be helpful.

Description:

Learn multiple techniques to apply paint or dye with surprising results. In this one night,

2 hour workshop, experienced artists and beginners alike will spray, spatter, dip, paint, and stamp.

You will learn to mix paint to achieve your favorite color. Combine techniques to produce a

finished scarf different from any you have made using just one technique.
